Quickstart: AI page scanning in four steps
AI page scanning is an early access feature that lets you record ALTR test results from paper instead of typing them in. It is switched on for schools that have opted in to the Early Access Program. If you cannot see the buttons described here, ask your principal to opt your school in under Settings, Profile, "Early Access".
Step 1: Print the test sheets
On the Tests page, find the test level you are about to assess and click "Print Tests". Everyone at that level is selected by default; deselect anyone who is away, click "Generate PDF", then "Print / Save as PDF". Each sheet has the student's name, the term and week, numbered lines for each test, and a QR code that tells ALTR whose sheet it is.
Step 2: Administer the test
Administer the test as you normally would, with each student writing on their own sheet. One student per sheet.
Step 3: Scan the sheets
Click "Scan Tests" on the same test level, then scan the pile whichever way suits you:
- Webcam: hold each sheet up to your webcam until you see "Page captured", then put it down and hold up the next. See How do I scan test sheets with my webcam?
- Phone: click "Scan from phone", scan the QR code with your phone, then capture each sheet with the phone's camera. See How do I scan test sheets from my phone?
- Photocopier or scanner: scan the whole pile into one PDF, then click "Upload scanned PDF". See How do I upload test sheets I scanned on a photocopier or scanner?
ALTR reads each page as it arrives. Under the camera you will see how many pages have been scanned, and "Processing" while ALTR is still reading pages. Wait until it says "All pages processed" before you click "Finished", so every page is ready when you move on to the review.
Step 4: Review and submit
After you click "Finished", ALTR asks you about anything it could not work out on its own, then shows the Scan Summary: a score for every student, with the words it was unsure about highlighted. Check those, make adjustments if necessary, then click "Submit results". The results appear in each student's Past Tests with a small camera icon, and a copy of the scanned page along with the result.
